Artist’s Statement:
I believe an artist’s role is to instill in the viewer of his or her work a greater truth about the subject than can be seen from the surface. Keeping this in mind, the southwest landscapes that I love to paint present a particular problem because of the sheer magnitude of the surface beauty that exists here alone.
Thus when I paint a particular scene, I feel compelled to dig deep within myself to pull out the emotion that sparked me when veiwing the scene initially. To pull out that “greater truth” is the challenge that keeps me going. It is my hope that the viewer of my work will not just see the landscape for its surface beauty, but experience the emotion I felt while actually painting. I strive to evoke a heightened sense of reality in the viewer which I feel when I am wrapped in the creative process. It is my greatest reward when someone else is as moved as I by what I have tried to convey through my painting.
